Adam will be preaching on forgiveness and Biblical reconciliation.

As part of our sinful nature, we all struggle to forgive as Christ has forgiven us.

This series will look in Scripture to see what Jesus requires of us and then give practical helps in how to apply forgiveness to one another in our daily lives.

The Bible says:

  • "...and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses." Matthew 6:12-15
  • "Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven..." Luke 6:36-37
  • Then Peter came up and said to him, "Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?" Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven." Matthew 18:21-22
  • "And whenever you stand praying, forgive if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive your trespasses." Mark 11:25
  • "But I say to you that everyone who is angray with his brother will be liable to judgement... So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift." Matthew 5:22a, 23-24
  • "...but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8
  • "And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross." Colossians 2:13-14
  • "Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful." Colossians 3:12-15
  • Below are a few quotes that highlight our need to forgive:

  • "The point of Matthew 6:15 and 18:35 is that if we hold fast to an unforgiving spirit, we will be handed over to the tormentors. We will lose heaven, and gain hell. The reason is not because we can earn heaven or merit heaven by forgiving others, but because holding fast to an unforgiving spirit proves that we do not trust Christ. If we trust him, we will not spurn his way of life. If we trust him, we will not be able to take forgiveness from his hand for our million dollar debt and withhold it from our ten dollar debtor." John Piper (Desiring God)
  • "But Jesus' point is this - our forgiveness should be lavish and generous and not bridled by any narrow numerical limitations and besides that, if you are keeping score of the offences against you, then you haven't really forgiven those offences anyway." Phil Johnson on Matthew 18 (GraceLife)
  • “Bitterness is like drinking a poison and hoping that it hurts somebody else.” Stephanie Pine (Bethesda Baptist)
  • "... you know what? Forgiveness is hard, and because it is hard, we need to know what it is and we need to know how to do it because God tells us to do it." Jack Hughes (Calvary Bible Church)
  • "Those who truly believe the Gospel end up becoming like the Gospel" J.D. Greear (visiting speaker at Hope Hollywood Church)
